With over 60 million runners, joggers, and trail runners in the U.S. alone (according to Statista), it's no surprise that the sport has formed a culture of its own. Runners can be particular about the shoes they wear, the gear they use, and the events they run in. Today, we're talking about three things that runners are loving in 2023.

Runners put a lot of miles on their shoes, and a lot of sweat, too. Foot odor can affect anyone, but those who are especially active may be more likely to suffer. If your loved ones have started putting your running shoes out on the porch to 'air out,' it's time to get rid of those stinky feet.

Here are a few tips to avoid and prevent foot odor:

  1. Keep your shoes clean and dry.
  2. Replace your damaged shoes ASAP.
  3. Don't re-wear socks. A fresh pair every day is crucial.
  4. Enjoy the wonders of modern technology: use a UV Shoe Sanitizer to eliminate odor-causing bacteria.

In this article, you can learn how to get rid of foot odor and athletes foot.

2. Pampering Their Feet After a Racemedical pedicures

Your feet carry you though every mile of every run you embark on, so taking care of them post-run is paramount. A medical pedicure is a safe, sterile way to pamper your feet and ensure that they can keep up with you as you tackle your running goals.

What is a medical pedicure?

Also called a medi-pedi, this service is a non-invasive treatment that focuses on the hygienic and aesthetic care of your toenails and feet. Services may vary, but typically include:

  • An examination by a pedicure technician who has been trained by a podiatrist.
  • Soaking the feet in warm water.
  • Hot towels.
  • Foot and lower-leg massage.
  • Treatment of corns, calluses, and other bothersome foot ailments.
  • Application of lotion and podiatrist-approved nail polish.

You can learn more by reading our article on what to expect from your medical pedicure. Because surgically-sterilized and single-use instruments are used, you can expect a cleaner experience than what you'd find at a traditional nail salon. Avoiding fungal infections, warts, and other issues often caused by unhygienic salon practices will ensure that you are never side-lined because of your feet.

Attention Mid-Michigan Runners: from now until July 31st, bring in proof that you've completed a race of any distance in 2023 (shoe tag, bib number, or even a confirmation email) for 15% off your next medical pedicure service.

Dr. Dailey after running a 5K3. Participating in a Virtual 5K

Running or walking a 5K has benefits of its own. Getting up and out of the house, away from TV, phone, or computer screens, has lasting benefits for your overall health! But why participate in a virtual 5K? This more informal way of organizing a 5K run/walk grew in popularity throughout 2020 due to the pandemic.

Starting on July 24th, Freeland Foot and Ankle Clinic will host our annual Move Your Feet Virtual 5K! The idea was born out of the pandemic when real, in-person races were impossible. We came up with this idea, and it stuck!

The popularity didn't plateau there, though. Runners love virtual running events for a few reasons:

  • You can complete the mileage at your own pace. As long as you've tracked a total of 3.1 miles by the end of the week, we consider you a winner! Instead of pushing yourself into exhaustion by trying to finish at the same time as other racers, you can go at your own pace.
  • Join in with your team at work, a group of friends, or just your dog. Complete the 5K with those you love! Enjoy each other's company out in nature as you move your feet and work towards that prize. We think this is a great Team-Building event for your work family, too!
  • Join Freeland Foot and Ankle Clinic! You're invited to complete the 5K with the FFAC Team and Dr. Dailey! See below for details.

How Does a Virtual 5K Work?

  • This walk/run is free to participate in. You have one week, from July 24th to July 31st, to complete a 5K.
  • Complete all 3.1 miles at once, or break it up and track each walk or run seperately.
  • Move your feet! Get out and get moving, whether you're walking or running. Make sure to use a fitness tracker to track your route, or you can do so manually.
  • Send us a Facebook message with a screenshot from your app or call us and let us know what your route was! We'll record you after you've completed a 5K (3.1 Miles).
